The epidemic of childhood obesity, with about 110 million overweight or obese children worldwide, is followed by increasing rates of associated comorbidities in children. [1] As such, pediatric obesity represents one of the most significant global public health issues of today. [2],[3] Important comorbidities of obesity include endocrine, metabolic, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and disorders of oral health. The impact of childhood obesity is not limited to the pediatric population but extends throughout adulthood. This is partially because obesity in childhood is important prognostic factor for being obese as an adult, but also because inappropriate lifestyle and eating habits acquired during childhood are more persistent and more difficult to correct later in life. [4],[5] Having that in mind, childhood obesity is an important public health topic at the pediatric dental office, with significant long-term consequences in the obese adults. The authors of the article "Childhood obesity and holistic oral health" [6] did an excellent job in summarizing the wide area of the impact childhood obesity has on various aspects of oral health, which should provide readers with sufficient insight on multitude of changes and disorders the obesity causes.

General introduction to pediatric obesity is followed by step-by-step guide into evaluation of overweight status in a child, which should prove very useful for dentists which have not assessed the degree of obesity in children on a regular basis so far. Then, association of obesity and dental carries is assessed, and interesting findings of several studies regarding this topic are presented. Influence of childhood obesity on timing of tooth eruption and dental development, as well as periodontal diseases associated with obesity are also covered. Very practical, everyday issue of pharmacosedation in children during dental procedures and the fact that childhood obesity influences this aspect of oral health too has also been reviewed in this paper.

The authors provide a thorough review of the impact childhood obesity has on oral health in a concise and interesting manner. More importantly, authors emphasize the role of pediatric dentist in the prevention, detection, and early treatment of childhood obesity, including referral to pediatrician or nutritionist. Most important message, this paper sends to pediatric dentists is the recommendation to monitor and record body mass indexes of overweight children in each child's dental record. This recommendation should result in a deeper insight of the impact of childhood obesity on dental health in further studies; but more importantly, it should raise the level of awareness in dental health professionals and include them in the struggle against childhood obesity, the pandemic which threatens not only children of today, but also future generations of adults.
